Message-ID: From: Carolyn Hayek, president@aauw-wa.org To: Washington State Members at Large of the American Association of University Women Date: March 9, 2006 Re: We want YOU to attend convention! It's a global world, and we all are part of it. But when was the last time you had a chance to meet a woman who grew up in East Africa, or a woman who conducts international projects for women and children, or a woman who was a Fulbright Scholar in the Slovak Republic? When was the last time you met a woman who grew up in poverty in Belfast, Ireland and is now committed to helping to strengthen girls interest in science and math? And when did you last meet a woman who's been the Canadian Federation of University Women delegate to the United Nations' Commission on the Status of Women? You can meet all of these women, maybe have dinner with them, but surely be inspired by their stories and their work. You can also learn more about how to make your AAUW membership experience more meaningful. Speaking of the global world, there's nothing more global than the information revolution - and you can meet women who are working to increase the number of Washington women in Science and Technology careers. All this - and tulips, too! This is an event you don't want to miss. Register RIGHT NOW by going to: http://www.aauw-wa.org/members/events/sc_convention_info.html for registration forms for the AAUW Convention in Mount Vernon. Friends, spouses and other companions are welcome as guests at all the meals and there is plenty for them to do while the meetings and workshops are going on. (If you can't get the password to work, send me an e-mail and I will help you out.) Early bird registration deadline is March 15 for the discounted rate. You can also attend for one day only. Bring your friends! This will be my last convention as state president and I'd like to meet as many of you as possible. If you have a fast internet connection, you can also read lots of details in the most recent state newsletter, which is now available at: http://www.aauw-wa.org/news/newsletters/2006Spring_evergreenleader.pdf. You will also find articles and pictures of the candidates for state office in the organization. Books of the Month for April and May 2006 April She Says by Venus Khoury-Ghata (2003) Vénus Khoury-Ghata’s She Says explores the mythic and confessional attractions and repulsions of the French and Arabic imaginations with poems that open like “a suitcase filled with alphabets.” Sex, barrenness, grief, and death—the backdrop of a war-ravaged country—are always at the edges, made increasingly urgent by lines often jagged and spare, their music unaltered. Vénus Khoury-Ghata was born in the Lebanese mountain village of Bsherre, also the birthplace of Khalil Gibran. She was taught Arabic by her mother, an illiterate woman with an intense feeling for the ‘silent forces’ in everyday life. Her father, a Christian theologian who had worked as a French-Arabic interpreter, instilled in her a love for the French language and the world of biblical symbolism. She has been a resident of France since 1973, and is the author of a dozen collections of poems and as many novels. Her poems, in Marilyn Hacker’s translations, have appeared in the English-speaking world in Ambit, Banipal: a Journal of Modern Arab Literature, Field, Jacket, The Manhattan Review, Metre, Poetry, Shenandoah and Verse. May (Asian Pacific American Heritage Month) The Red Azaleaby Anchee Min (1994/1999) The autobiography of a young Chinese woman born in 1957 as the eldest of four children of an educated couple, describing their changed lives during the Maoist regime. Min survives farm life to be chosen to train as an actress, emigrating to the U.S. in 1984 when she could no longer tolerate life in China. Born in Shanghai in 1957, Anchee Min came to the U.S. in 1984 with the help of actress Joan Chen. She has worked as a waitress, a house cleaner, an assistant on construction sites, a fabric painter, a messenger, and a model while attending English as a Second Language classes. Red Azalea was written over eight years and won the Carl Sandburg Literary Award in 1993. Book clubs are a fun, social way to open a dialogue on women, diversity, and change. Many AAUW members share a love of reading, and that love, partnered with a desire to seek out books written from diverse perspectives, launched a new component of AAUW's diversity outreach program in 1996— AAUW's ˇAdelante! Book of the Month Club. Since then, AAUW members have enjoyed exploring new ideas and perspectives through monthly discussions, both in person and through e-mail. ˇAdelante! book groups meet in book stores, libraries, other public venues, and online, gathering both members and nonmembers to talk about issues of social justice based on the month’s selection.
