Book Club selections encourage members and nonmembers to open a dialogue of women and diversity in their communities. Waist-High in the World: A Life Among the Nondisabled by Nancy Mairs (1997) Nancy Mairs, a gifted essayist who is fierce and funny by turns, landed in a wheelchair years ago due to degenerative multiple sclerosis that has sapped much of her strength. She bends an agile mind and sharp tongue around the daily tasks of seeing eye-to-navel with a world that clearly prefers nondisabled "normals." You can also join the discussion online? as AAUW supports an online discussion board for Adelante! books and related discussions. See http://www.aauw.org/community_programs/adela nte/06.cfm for a list of the 2006-07 Adelante! Book Club selections. Direct comments and questions to feedback@aauw-wa.org VOTE! ON NOVEMBER 7th! As members of AAUW, we know the importance of voting - every single time we have the opportunity. Voting is a privilege that we don't take for granted - it wasn't easy for women to get the right to vote, and we have a special obligation to exercise that right. Now we learn that" 39% of AAUW of Washington members (that's branch members and members-at-large) have a history of consistently not voting in mid-term elections such as the one on November 7." This information comes from a project called Engaging Women Voters in which AAUW is participating. The project is testing the effectiveness of woman-to-woman voter mobilization in three states (Washington, Arizona, and Michigan.) As part of AAUW's involvement in this project, the AAUW membership list for Washington State was matched against the voter history file to determine voting consistency. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we had 100% participation this year? Let's show that AAUW women in Washington are committed to democracy and exercising their right to vote! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
