Do not reply to this message. Direct comments and questions to feedback@aauw-wa.org AAUW-WA LEADER LETTER, April 10, 2007 Equal Pay Day -April 24 Information about Equal Pay Day was provided to all members in the Member Letter for April. It will not be repeated except for the 2007 Theme One-Pager. It is a good reference page for the Women's Economic Security theme. It is also on our state web site under Mission Programs. To find it on the national web site go to: http://www.aauw.org/newvision/documents/themeHighlights.pdf. The newest research: Behind the Pay Gap, will be released on April 24, 2007. It examines earnings of female and male college graduates in the first 10 years after graduation, the widening pay gap, and influencing factors. We hope to have the report and a report distribution guide with ideas for outreach to college campuses and communities available at the Spokane Convention. Presidents may get press release information before then so stay tuned. Honoring Our Legacy- Embracing Our Future - This is a critical time as we contemplate the restructuring at Association. We also rejoice and celebrate the 125th Anniversary of AAUW. As a group we will be doing both this month at the State Convention in Spokane. I hope all branches will be represented. Jeaneane St. John, Candidate for Association Co- Finance VP, will give a presentation on the proposed Bylaws Amendments and Restructuring Proposals. These can be found in the Outlook, which you should have just received in the mail. You should also take a good look at the Public Policy program being proposed for 2007-2009. Bring your questions and comments about these items to Spokane. Some questions about the Saturday night celebration have come to me and to feedback@aauw-wa.org. Hopefully, they have been answered. Just in case there are lingering doubts as to what branches are to do on Saturday night in order to have their branch story heard, it can be done in one of two ways. It can be told in a creative entertaining way; perhaps make us laugh a bit with a song and dance routine (two minute), or it can be more serious and prepare a one-minute elevator speech on "Why Should I Join AAUW?" The answer should highlight your branch. The time limits will be enforced and branches will not be able to do both. Consult Ellen at program@aauw-wa.org if you still have questions. The convention schedule is very full, however if your branch has already elected your officers for the new year try to make time for one or two members from your branch to meet with our web site assistant, Jim Dunkelberger. He will make the directory changes and go over your Web site Branch Page for any necessary changes on that page. Please make it only one appointment per branch. You will still have to submit the officer change form to Association and Records but some of the work will be accomplished for the New Year. Branch presidents (2006-2007 and are still serving until June 30th) are members of the State Board. As such they are obligated to attend the board meeting on Friday Evening. In the absence of the president someone else, such as the incoming president (2007-2008) can be designated the Head of Delegation on the credentials form and they will have the vote at the Friday State Board meeting. Of course, other members can attend this meeting, but will not be able to vote. The hospitality room will be open during the meeting so other branch leaders and members can be networking. National Convention The Phoenix is rising in Arizona, June 29-July 2, 2007. SAVE THE DATE. Engage, learn, network, experience, transform and celebrate at the 2007 AAUW National Convention. This year's theme, Expanding the Legacy of Leadership, will focus on the following tracks: a.. Uniquely AAUW explores the most useful techniques for carrying out AAUW operations efficiently so that the mission can be most effectively achieved. Presentations will meet the specific operational needs of AAUW's volunteer leaders. b.. Global Perspectives explores similarities and differences, and focuses on shared aspirations for women around the globe. Presentations will demonstrate ways that women can collaborate to strengthen the future of women and girls worldwide. c.. Economic Empowerment explores crucial issues in education, employment, the economy of the future, and financial literacy. Presentations will offer programs and resources to help increase the success of women and girls in today's society and illustrate ways these programs and resources can be used to affect change. d.. Action for Equity explores opportunities and goals for future action. Presentations will showcase strategies for identifying and addressing challenges in equity and education, emphasizing ways activists can use their resources and leadership skills to accomplish AAUW issue priorities. For detailed information-and opportunities for involvement-visit the national website at http://www.aauw.org/index.cfm . National Girls Collaborative Project. As you know, AAUW is participating in a 3-year grant from the National Science Foundation which is funding the National Girls Collaborative Project. An information sheet was already sent to the branches; however this is a quick review of how your branch can get involved: 1. If you participate in a STEM project as a branch, such as Expanding Your Horizons, the High School Scholar Recognition Program, community grants, or similar project, register it in the NGCP directory. To do this, go to: www.pugetsoundcenter.org/ngcp/directory. 2. Look over the projects/programs already listed for your area. If you know of a program that should be listed and isn't, contact that organization to tell them about this program and suggest they get listed. 3. Review the directory to identify potential speakers for branch meetings or community programs. If you find a speaker or a project always say you found them on the NGCP list. 4. If your branch has an idea for a new STEM project which could use funding, applications for $1000 mini-grants will be available on the NGCP website soon. The funding would become available in the fall of 2007 or early 2008, if you are a successful applicant. Mini-grant projects must involve at least two organizations that are listed in the NGCP on-line directory, another reason to get your branch or project listed. Contact Carolyn Hayek, AAUW Regional Liaison, at hayekservices@aol.com, 425-822-2794 if you have questions about this project. Appointments to be made to the Educational Foundation-submit your vitae form if you want to be considered for a position. ACTION DATE: MAY 4, 2007 At its June 2007 meeting, the Educational Foundation Board of Directors will appoint one member each to the Development Committee and Program Committee. The appointments are for a two-year term from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2009 and the meetings are held in Washington, DC. Program and Development Committees The exact dates for Fall 2007, Spring 2008, Fall 2008, and Spring 2009 are still to be determined. These Foundation committees recommend policies for the general content and direction of the programs of the Educational Foundation (Program Committee) or fundraising (Development Committee). Members of the committee: a.. should be selected so that a broad representation of membership is obtained; b.. shall have displayed an active interest in AAUW and especially in activities related to the Foundation; c.. should have a broad knowledge of the changing needs of women and girls and the challenges they face; d.. should have extensive knowledge of all Foundation programs (issues pertinent to fellowships, Research & Projects, Legal Advocacy Fund, etc.) or fundraising/development. Professional or volunteer experience in development is a desirable qualification for the Foundation Development Committee. Please note the following: Each applicant is asked to submit an AAUW vitae form. Each application must present a complete picture of the candidate and her/his qualifications as the Board will be evaluating applications from the written vitae. Only that information will be used. Each candidate can apply for one position only. It will not be appropriate for any candidate or supporter to directly contact a board member to lobby for appointment. Vitae forms are available through the Executive Office and may be requested by e-mailing executive@aauw.org or by telephone 202/785-7788 or 202/785-7710, or may be found on the AAUW web site at http://aauw.org/community_programs/leadership_opportunities/leadership_opportunities.cfm. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the Executive Office at 202/785-7788. EXPECTATIONS OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS Committee members are expected to participate in committee meetings in person and via conference calls as scheduled, and to fulfill specific responsibilities between meetings. If you have further questions regarding the responsibilities of a committee member, please contact Educational Foundation President Barbara O'Connor at efpres@comcast.net. FUNDING FOR VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are reimbursed by AAUW for their travel, hotel, and meal expenses when attending committee meetings and for expenses incurred (such as telephone and copying) in the exercise of the responsibilities of their position.
