Interbranch Programming Effort a Success Several AAUW interbranches in the San Francisco Bay area recently sponsored a series of events educating members and the public about AAUW's policy efforts. AAUW Public Policy and Government Relations Director Lisa Maatz was the featured speaker. 2. Current CU State of Affairs - Food for Thought By Carol Vrostek, our national CU Relations Chair. I have spent several hours on the AAUW website going state by state. After linking with state website, I went to state leadership or officers, trying to determine which states have CU chairs and which do not. (I included Guam and Puerto Rico in the count.) Some small states or less populous states had no website. If there was no state website, I made the assumption( perhaps incorrectly) that there was no CU chair, even though each has one or two CU partners: Current # of CU Partners Listed on AAUW Website 484. Challenges I. No Website (no likely CU Chair) -- 6 II. No CU Chair Listed -- 17 III, CU Position Listed but Vacant -- 5 IV. CU Position or Chair Listed but No Contact Info -- 4 States with No Evident CU Chair, Outreach, or Help to Branches -- 32 Promising Practices I. CU Page and Assorted Info. IA,* NY* PA* TX* II. CU Link to AAUW Website OH III. CU Chair's Name, Email and/or phone 15 It was interesting to note that the four states which actually had CU information on their websites took several different approaches. PLEASE CHECK THESE OUT ON THE AAUW WEBSITE: 1. New York State has a marketing dept. and the product shows. This is a treasure trove of information that any state or branch CU chair can use for visibility, marketing and outreach. All the materials are there for downloading. 2. Iowa posts a list of all current CU partners. It also provides a list of colleges/universities in proximity to branches, the name and contact information of the president or other campus official. It also posts the How to Recruit tip sheet. 3. Pennsylvania posts list of all current CU partners, a link to LTI and CAP projects. as well as links for student affiliates. 4. Texas posts list of all current CU partners with a link "How to Join." LAST WORD - Nowhere - anywhere - did I see even ONE link or reference to NCCWSL. Even though Pennsylvania had a link posted to LTI, the link did not work. Regards, Carol 3. Comments by the State President This Leader Letter is coming early as I will be on vacation from December 10 - 18 and will have limited computer time. It was also going to be short, until I received the above communications. I would usually send these to State Board/Brand Presidents as attachments. The information was something I want all branch officers to think about and help find ways we can improve; therefore I am sending them via the leader list serve. Our website does list our CU partners, however, our CU representative is also Member-at-Large (MAL) Membership VP and it may not have been obvious. Not many states have a MAL VP. I would like your comments and ideas on this on this subject. We have had the NCCWSL information in the public section. We offer a scholarship to NCCWSL. During the application time period for this state-wide scholarship, this information was on our site. When the information became dated it was removed. We will have it up again in January, but we need to do better on this. I would like to encourage branches to think of ways to get publicity out to college students in your area to attend. Some colleges give scholarships for leaders to attend, but students do not know to ask. Branches may also consider giving a local scholarship for a student to attend. Perhaps award a previous recipient of your local scholarship. During the convention discussions on scholarships we heard that branches are dealing with less money to give for scholarships and the college costs are up, so it is "hardly worth giving scholarships" some said. Yes, a grant of $500 seems to be a rather small scholarship, but for that same amount of money you could send a student to this conference attended by female student leaders all over the United States. It would mean a lot to a college student to be honored this way. Presidents received an advance copy of our new Branch Awards application, which will be used to honor top branches at the state convention. The application and instructions will be on-line in December. This Branch Futurists Award application is meant to be reviewed and completed with input from all branch officers not just the president. It is based on the Vision and Mission statements, which Association adopted last year. I have heard from the Oregon President. Not only was she impressed, but felt they may adopt this program, as well. Thank you, Ellen Imsland, Awards Chair. This will take the place of the 21st Century award application. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you who may be reading this late because of flooding and power outage, especially members from Lewis County and Twin Harbors Branches. Have a happy holiday season! Connie Dunkelberger president@aauw-wa.org If you are no longer a branch officer of AAUW-WA and do not wish to receive The monthly Leader Letters please contact feedback@aauw.org. Give us your name and branch so we will remove your name from your branch's directory, as well. You will be unsubscribed as soon possible. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
