From aauw-leaders at lists.olympus.net Tue Jun 12 11:49:39 2007 From: aauw-leaders at lists.olympus.net (aauw-leaders@lists.olympus.net) Date: Tue Jun 12 11:19:32 2007 Subject: [AAUW-WA-Leaders] AAUW Leader Letter--Important news and updates - June, 2006 Message-ID: <000601c7ad1a$0fecf190$9002a8c0@connie> This Leader Letter is coming to you via AAUW of Washington Leader-listserv from Connie Dunkelberger, State President. Do not reply to this message. Direct comments and questions to feedback@aauw-wa.org AAUW-WA LEADER LETTER, June, 2007 Directories and Member Services On line The 2007 -2008 Branch Officers directory is on the State web site and e-mail addresses have been added to this list. Welcome to all the new branch officers, who are receiving this monthly Leader Letter for the first time. Please go to the list and check for accuracy of your branch list. Some branches submitted their officers through the new online Association Member Services and this listing doesn't have provision for some titles or co-officers as yet. The State web-site listed them as they were submitted. However, if you find you are listed as an "other" or some title that doesn't seem accurate to what you do and want your title changed, send it (and any other corrections) to changes@aauw-wa.org. We have a few branches where the entire list is still the 2006-2007 officers. That means your list has not been submitted. The branch list should be submitted at one time, instead of each officer contacting "changes". You can use the old form available at: http://www.aauw.org/member_center/forms/branchofficers.cfm. Submit the names of the officers you have, especially the president and membership. As you appoint new officers you can go to the on-line Member Services and submit those names at any time at: http://www.aauw.org/member_center/messages/index.cfm. (Scroll down to Member Services on-line to log in). Any member will be able to see the Association listing; however, access to make officer changes for your branch is given to the President unless she adds others. Access to this area will change on July 1st, so get your new officers listed. If you want them on the State website directory, you will need to send the names to changes@aauw-wa.org. No updates will be made to your Branch Page in the public section until the changes are requested by the branch. Please include your branch name with any changes you submit. In the News: DaVina Hoyt, Young Member Rep on the State Board, just got back from the conference for student leaders (NCCWSL) in the other Washington. She was on the National Student Advisory Council for that conference. A promotional video was made at the conference and DaVina has a part in the video. The producers asked for pictures from Spokane, which would show her son, Caleb. We have one from Mt. Vernon, which has been on the Tacoma Website, taken by Ann Copeland. If anyone has a digital picture of the Spokane convention, which would have the two of them in it (or just Caleb), please send to DaVina at dhoyt_2006@yahoo.com . She needs them immediately, as they are working on the video now. It will be shown at the Phoenix Convention. DaVina is no longer a MAL. She joined the Palouse Garfield Branch. She wants to start a branch in Pullman; however, that may be an AAUW Student Affiliate Branch. They need a branch sponsor and she wanted a branch home, too. She is a candidate for a position on the Educational Foundation Board of Directors. She is lacking funds to mount this campaign, not to mention the expense of getting to the convention. If any individual or branch would like to contribute money, ideas or help with the campaign at the convention, please contact DaVina. Branch Policies and Procedures As you all know Association has some significant Bylaws changes to be voted on in Phoenix at the end of this month. This does not mean you will need to make changes immediately no matter how the vote comes out. Unless your bylaws are such that you just can't live with them for another two years, this is not a time to make changes. There will be a transition time and model branch bylaws will be formulated by Association to fit any changes made at the national level. However, in your yearly planning and long range strategy, you may want to look at your policies and procedures to see if they need some "tweaking". Policies need to be specific enough for a positive and responsible working atmosphere, yet flexible to enable your branch board to take advantage of the new opportunities when they occur. For example: The Girls Collaborative/National Science Foundation funding has the requirement of working with other organizations. Do you have policies that are open enough to apply for these grants yet safeguarding the use of your membership lists? In your review you could look at how inclusive your branch is to MALs in the area. Are they forced to be a member to be a part of an interest group or work on projects? Some MALs are very willing to work on projects, but have no interest or time to hold an office nor do they want to be "arm twisted". You may also want to look at other aspects of your policies to cover the changing ways of communication. The internet and e mail messages are great tools. However, anything sent out to members, even within the branch, should always be written in a positive manner. WANTED: Appointees for State Board Members I have appointed three board members so far: Sara Kersley, Walla Walla Branch, will continue on as Bylaws Chair; Julie Williams, Whidbey Island Branch, will continue as the College Scholarship Chair; and Dixie Swenson, Lake Washington Branch, will remain as the Public Policy Chair. Although she will be the chair for both federal and state issues, Dixie does want assistance for STEM and/or other Public Policies related events. Further information on these projects can be obtained by contacting her at: publicpolicy@aauw-wa.org . In addition to the three; Kathi Pickett, Hudson's Bay Branch, has agreed to stay on as Evergreen Leader editor. That position is still considered open due pending the outcome of the vote regarding the Leader and budget concerns, which will be held on August 11th. The deadline for an on-line Summer Evergreen Leader is June 30th. Submit your news at: evergreenleader@aauw-wa.org. I am especially looking for the following positions: State Historian - This person will be charged with coordinating recorded interviews with some of our oldest branch members, even if they don't think they made history. The interviews will be done by several people, so the chair will not be tasked to do them unless she wants to do some. This effort is will help the Women's History Consortium in preparation for the 2010 Celebration of Women's Suffrage in Washington. State Communications - A person to help the Evergreen Leader editor in news gathering etc. She would also be tasked with helping coordinate and edit documents for the web site. I am looking for a person with writing and editing skills, more than computer skills. She will be working with Jim Dunkelberger, Web Assistant, and our design firm. State Scholars Recognition Chair - This will be an expanded position from what it has been in the past. She will work with both Program VP (Mission) and Public Policy Chair. If you are interested in being appointed to the 2007-2008 year or running for elected office in 2008-2009, you will need to complete the Vita form and submit it to Carolyn Cowan, nominations@aauw-wa.org . You will find the forms at: http://www.aauw-wa.org/members/resources/gov_leadervitae_app.html. Leadership Conference in Cle Elum on August 11th The Leadership Conference will be held at Koinonia Retreat Center in Cle Elum this year. The program is still being formulated, as we want to incorporate the changes and events from the Association Convention*. Branch Presidents should make plans to attend or send a proxy to vote for you at the State Board Meeting. Klaras Ihnken and the Evergreen Leader/Budget task force will have proposals ready for that important vote. There will be other issues, as well. There will be other things for all branch leaders to learn and do during the day, besides the board meeting. (Elected and appointed board members have their own vote, but can not vote again for the branch.) The small branch subsidy could be used for this conference. For information on the subsidy go to: http://www.aauw-wa.org/members/about/gov_pol_complete.html#540 . *A voting delegation of at least 25 will be in Phoenix: We have 13 branches with a Head of Delegation to caste votes for their branches in addition to 10 State Delegates. Two members from Washington have Association votes. We have room for others. The on-line registration ends this Friday at midnight. Have a great time planning for the new program year and remember that I still want to visit all branches. Sincerely, Connie Dunkelberger Connie Dunkelberger AAUW Leader Letters arrive once a month.
