Equity Issues in the News: AAUW Student Branch in West Virginia Creating Bonds Times West Virginian (Sunday, Nov. 11) http://www.timeswv.com/daily_grind/local_story_315225638.html There's a passionate new group emerging among the student organizations at Fairmont State University. It's the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and members have already established community-based support with a unique mission. Amanda Barber, co-president of the Fairmont State branch of the organization, added, "(AAUW) promotes education as a gateway to freedom, because equity is still an issue." International Women's Issues Women and Security: Canaries in the Mine Huffington Post (Thursday, Nov.15) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/marie-wilson/women-and-security-canar_b_72805.html "Women's" issues such as health and education, overpopulation, the bolstering of human rights, and combating HIV/AIDS have long been segregated as "soft" issues and excluded from high-level security debates. As these issues become the overriding security concerns around the globe, women are uniquely positioned to address them. Title IX The Legacy of Title IX The Boston Globe (Monday, Nov.12) http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2007/11/12/the_legacy_of_title_ix/ Last night, ESPN opened its coverage of women's college basketball with the Rutgers team in the primetime slot. Within a month's time, Rutgers, which entered the season ranked number three in the AP poll, will make four appearances on the premiere sports network. Primetime television coverage of women's sports wouldn't exist but for a dramatic change in public attitude toward female athletes brought about by a law that doesn't even mention the word sports. 3. I am the appropriate one to send the copy of your contribution report when you send the original report and check to Association. My new address is: 6015 51st Place South; Seattle, WA 98118. Here is an excerpt from past publications, which I found interesting. It is worth sharing with branch members. Important Reminder - Contribute Through Your IRA In August of 2006 President Bush signed into law legislation that is pertinent to the AAUW Educational Foundation and membership giving. This law allows all individuals who are 70 ? years of age and older to make a charitable gift to a qualified not-for-profit organization through their IRA account without any tax consequences. This gift may be taken as the donor's minimum distribution for the year and can go up to $100,000. Because of their 501 (c)(3) nonprofit status, the Educational Foundation, the Legal advocacy Fund, and the Leadership and Training Institute are all eligible to receive these IRA gifts. Please ensure that all members you know are aware of this great opportunity and remind your branches that all of these contributions must be received by no later than December 31, 2007. For specific instructions on how to contribute IRA gifts to the charitable entities of AAUW, please contact Carol Rognrud, Manager of Major and Planned Giving at 202.728.7627 or rognrudc@aauw.org.
