Applying for this money is by invitation only. Washington has been chosen as one of sixteen states to apply for a 2008-2009 Impact Grant. The goal of the Public Policy Impact Grants is to organize grassroots advocacy on AAUW public policy priorities. Grants can be used for lobbying efforts, voter education programs, and voter turnout activities. One-size does not fit all. Therefore, each project will be unique and we need to get your ideas and commitment to help with this effort. Please contact Dixie Swenson, State Public Policy Chair, for information on what you or your branch can do to help with applying for this grant. She can be reached at: publicpolicy@aauw-wa.org. Connie Dunkelberger, State President 2. AAUW in the News (reprinted from Association news reports) Local Branch of AAUW Celebrates 60 Years The Port Townsend and Jefferson County Leader (Wednesday, March 26) http://www.ptleader.com/main.asp?SectionID=10&SubSectionID=10&ArticleID=20444&TM=54193.25 "In 1948, the war was over, the boys had come back, and many women had given up their wartime jobs and gone home. We don't really know why two Port Townsend women, Edith Miller and Dorothy Meyers, decided to call a meeting at the Palm Room and see if anybody else wanted to start a chapter of the American Association of University Women. Apparently, they found 37 women who did, and the Port Townsend branch was chartered in February 1948." 3. Visit AAUW's Pay Equity webpage at: http://www.aauw.org/advocacy/issue_advocacy/actionpages/payequity.cfm . You can download the Pay Equity Resource Kit for ideas, tips, and resources to use in your community on Equal Pay Day and throughout the year. Examples for activities include a pay equity bake sale or "unhappy hour," where women get a 23 percent discount while men pay full price, and encouraging women to wear red to represent the way the pay gap puts women "in the red." AAUW has "I am the face of pay equity" signs and stickers available for use at AAUW events. You can also urge your senators to support the Fair Pay Restoration Act through AAUW's Two-Minute Activist. With the exciting prospect of this bill moving forward in Congress, all AAUW members must do their part to promote this legislation. Finally, email AAUW's Public Policy and Government Relations staff at VoterEd@aauw.org to let them know what you plan to do for Equal Pay Day in your community. 4.
