July 1st all authorizations will be changed and/or dropped so please get these in as soon as possible. Convention News: A big THANK YOU goes to the South Puget Sound District for the superb convention at Little Creek last weekend. With AAUW speakers including national officers, an International Fellow, American Fellow and an LAF plaintiff, it was packed with information about our organization and how Educational Foundation funds are put to good use. We also heard how small amounts of money loaned (microloans) to women in countries around the world pay great dividends in changing the lives of women and girls. Reports from each of the workshops will be available on-line as soon as they are all submitted. The convention business meetings resulted in votes to change the frequency of conventions from the annual basis to biannual and the addition of an elected VP of Communications to the Executive Committee. The Board of Directors adopted a new goals and mission statement to be more in line with Association and voted to redesign the web site. A Request for Proposal is being completed and will go out to firms as soon as possible. Questionnaires have gone to branch presidents to gather data from members as to what they would like on a web site. If you have ideas and/or know of a firm which may want to submit a proposal please contact the web site task force member at seattleinc@aauw-wa.org or feedback@aauw-wa.org task force. LAF Changes: There are many changes being made within our organization by the Association Board and the Educational Foundation Board working together for the two years of transition. If you have not been forwarded memos about these changes by your branch president please contact feedback@aauw-wa.org and this information will be sent to you via attachment. You can also read about the changes on the AAUW website at: http://www.aauw.org/advocacy/laf/cases/index.cfm During her speech at Little Creek, LAF plaintiff Lisa Simpson stated that the most important part of her support from AAUW was the personal notes of encouragement she received while she was making her long journey through the court system. We have not had an AAUW adopted case in Washington; however we do have a plaintiff living and working in Washington at the present time and have a chance to give her notes of encouragement. The AAUW State Convention of Idaho will hear Michelle Juareguito, an AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund plaintiff, who will discuss her case with Feather River Community College of California, (a suit related to Title IX. Just as Simpson vs University of Colorado). Read more about that case at: http://www.aauw.org/About/newsroom/pressreleases/041607_featherRiver.cfm . The Eastern District branches were sent information about the Idaho Convention. If any branch or individual wants more information please contact feedback@aauw-wa.org or go to the Idaho web site at: http://www.aauwidaho.org/news.htm The convention is May 30 - June 1. Registration was May 1st and you will need to call to see if you can still register. Convention Resolution: Due to discussions about the LAF changes, timing and wanting more information about the reasons for these changes, the delegates at the convention passed a resolution on Sunday A.M. which has been forwarded to the presidents of both the Association and the Educational Foundation. This is the resolution: WHEREAS, AAUW members of Washington State learned at their April 25-27 convention that LAF will cease to fund plaintiff legal expenses effective December, 2008; and WHEREAS, a decision has also been made at the national level to expand AAUW support to cases beyond the campus setting; and WHEREAS, Washington State members had no opportunity to participate in these decisions, or to understand the actual impact of these changes; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that AAUW of Washington urges our national AAUW boards to delay implementation of the proposed changes in LAF functions until member input and comments can be solicited and evaluated and the implications of the changes better understood. Call for Vitae by Association: Applications to fill board vacancies are now underway: Deadline has been extended to June 1, 2008. If you want to be an integral part of the decision making at the Association level, here is your chance to be on a committee for one year. There are vacancies on the following committees: Bylaws (1); Program Development (1); Public Policy (4); Resolutions (4); Finance (2); and Membership (3). AAUW strongly encourages those who are interested in serving and playing an integral role in helping to shape the "new" AAUW to apply. The 2008 AAUW Call for Vitae is currently underway and is continuing to solicit and review vitae applications for June 2008 Committee appointments. The application form, supplemental questions, committee job description and working rules are available on the AAUW web site at: http://www.aauw.org/About/leadership/leadership_opportunities.cfm Contact Robeta Travis at travisr@aauw.org or (202) 785-7710 if you have questions or require additional information.
