Thanks to everyone who volunteered to do a "Get Out the Vote" calling for an Association research project. We hope we will have a great voter turnout. The branches taking part were: Seattle, Vancouver, Hudson's Bay, Wenatchee, Bellingham, Stanwood-Camano, Kirkland-Redmond, Tacoma, Issaquah, Clallam and Ritzville. Port Townsend did their own "Get Out the Vote", which was scheduled prior to the request from our national headquarters. Happy 125th to AAUW The governor signed a proclamation making November 28th AAUW Day. Many of our branches had mayors sign city proclamations, as well. We will try to have a list of them in the Evergreen Leader. We will be celebrating all year long until our national convention in Phoenix in June. Information on this historic time can be found at: http://www.aauw.org/aauw125th/index.cfm News from Association: Among the historic decisions made recently by the AAUW Board and the Educational Foundation Board were: a.. Adopted mission and vision statements v Mission Statement: AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research. v Vision Statement: AAUW will be a powerful advocate and visible leader in equity and education through research, philanthropy, and measurable change in critical areas impacting the lives of women and girls. National Science Foundation Grant Received - NSF awarded the AAUW Educational Foundation a five-year NSF grant to partner with Puget Sound Center for Teaching & Learning to expand the National Girls Collaborative Project. The project, also funded by NSF, aims to increase gender equity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. It develops regional collaboratives across the country to help girl-serving organizations, education, business, and industry work together to leverage resources and provide more opportunities for girls and young women in STEM career fields. This award also focuses on building the capacity of girl-serving organizations in the areas of informal learning, evaluation, and assessment. Planning at the national office has already begun. Director of Research Catherine Hill has been appointed the project's principal investigator, and she will play a leadership role in launching the project. She has begun work with the regional directors to identify AAUW members to serve as liaisons between AAUW and the regional girls collaboratives. In Year 1, regional liaisons will be appointed in the New England, Middle Atlantic, South Atlantic, Great Lakes, Mountain-Pacific, and California regions. The remaining regions will be assigned in Year 2. Contact Alice Bartelt Mountain Pacific Regional Director, for more information at: alibar@saif.com . Adelante! Book Club Adelante! Book Club selections encourage members and nonmembers to open a dialogue of women and diversity in their communities. For the 2006-07 Book Club selections: http://www.aauw.org/community_programs/adelante/06.cfm November (Native American Heritage Month) American Indian Ballerinas by Lili Cockerville Livingstone (1999) American Indian Ballerinas includes authorized mini biographies of ballerinas Rosella Hightower, Yvonne Chouteau, Maria Tallchief, and her sister Marjorie Tallchief. All four dancers share a common ethnicity (Native American) and state of origin (Oklahoma), and all came to prominence at the roughly the same time, the 1940s-1960s - though the four had markedly different temperaments. Without working too hard to compare them, the book shows how their common heritage of dance and spirituality suffused their respective artistic careers. You can also join the discussion online as AAUW supports an online discussion board for Adelante! books and related discussions. I hope that you will join me in reading and discussing the Adelante! books and I welcome your comments and questions. Strategic Process Update Strategic Process 2006 AAUW Association and Educational Foundation boards of directors are building on last month's historic Joint Boards Report, dated Oct. 31, 2006, on the future of AAUW. This report will be posted on the website (see below link) by Friday, Dec. 1. In the coming months, boards will be engaging task forces and other working groups composed of members, staff, and experts to accomplish two important goals: 1. To drill down deeper in defining the three strategic initiatives agreed to in the report-being driven by a single mission and vision, building a more diverse membership, and streamlining the organizational structure. 2. To share our work with members and engage them in achieving the potential this strategic realignment offers AAUW. Please let us know if you are interested in serving on a working group between now and the Convention in June. Send an email with contact information to the Executive Office, Sandy Monroe, at monroes@aauw.org. I have noticed information from the briefings reprinted in branch newsletters. This is the way communication should flow. Because this briefing covered a lot of material and also gives several Association web site addresses where you can get more information, I thought I would send it as the December Member Letter. If you would like to receive the EdEqChange briefings as they arrive, please let me know and I will get your e mail on the list. You should receive an Evergreen Leader at the end of this month. It will have information about Lobby Day, which is scheduled for January 29, 2007. The schedule and registration forms will be available online this month, as well. The topic will be "Washington Learns". If you want to view or review Ann Daley's presentation from the Ellensburg Leadership Conference it is on our website, also. Congratulations to the Vancouver Branch! They will be celebrating their 75th Anniversary on December 9th. Remember, you are the key to success for AAUW!
