April Money, A Memoir: Women, Emotions, and Cash by Liz Perle (2006) In spite of women's supposedly massive buying power and growing presence in Fortune 500 boardrooms, many women are still awfully old-fashioned when it comes to cash. Why do they show so little interest in managing investments? Or lie to their partners about what something costs? And what's behind that evil prescription known as "retail therapy"? Perle investigates these questions and others in this remarkable sociological study-cum-memoir. Perle's book raises more questions than it answers, which is part of its allure - it'll surely have readers thinking twice before they log on to Bloomingdales.com. May (Asian Pacific American Heritage Month) Kira-Kira (Newbery Medal Book) by Cynthia Kadohata (2004) In Cynthia Kadohata's lively, lovely, funny and sad novel - winner of the 2005 Newbery Medal - the Japanese-American Takeshima family moves from Iowa to Georgia in the 1950s when Katie, the narrator, is just in kindergarten. Though her parents endure grueling conditions and impossible hours in the non-unionized poultry plant and hatchery where they work, they somehow manage to create a loving, stable home for their three children: Lynn, Katie, and Sammy. Katie's trust in, and admiration for, her older sister Lynn never falters, even when her sisterly advice doesn't seem to make sense. Small moments shine the brightest in this poignant story; told beautifully and lyrically in Katie's fresh, honest voice. June (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Month) Beyond Acceptance: Parents of Lesbians & Gays Talk About Their Experiences by Carolyn W. Griffin and Marian J. Wirth (1997) Now fully revised and updated, Beyond Acceptance is a ground-breaking book that provides parents the comfort and knowledge they need to accept the gay children and build stronger family relationships. Based on the experiences of other parents, this book lets them know they are not alone and helps them through the emotional stages leading to reconciliation with their children. I hope that you will join me in reading and discussing the Adelante books and I welcome your comments and questions. Julie Buffington, AAUW of WA Diversity Chair Honoring Our Legacy- Embracing Our Future - This is a critical time as we contemplate the restructuring at Association. We also rejoice and celebrate the 125th Anniversary of AAUW. As a group we will be doing both this month at the State Convention in Spokane. I hope all branches will be represented. Jeaneane St. John, Candidate for Association Co- Finance VP, will give a presentation on the proposed Bylaws Amendments and Restructuring Proposals. These can be found in the Outlook, which you should have just received in the mail. You should also take a good look at the Public Policy program being proposed for 2007-2009. Bring your questions and comments about these items to Spokane. To quote from the Leaders Message in the Outlook "The symbolism and significance of this forthcoming convention are not subtle. Just as the legendary phoenix rises from the ashes to be reborn, so must AAUW." Ruth Sweetzer, President AAUW Association and Barbara O'Connor, President AAUW Educational Foundation Congratulations Branches I am so gratified as I visit branches that each branch has a unique quality that seems to work for them. Congratulations to the Federal Way Branch for their community involvement. This is not a large branch; however they seemed to be extraordinarily involved in a lot of community affairs and worthwhile equity projects. Although I saw several AAUW members from surrounding branches, at a recent Women's History Workshop at the State History Museum, however I was especially impressed to see members of the Everett Branch there due to the distance they came for the event. Watch for Women's History Workshops and be a part of this state wide effort to celebrate in 2010. Collecting oral history is part of this project, so if you or your branch has a person who should be interviewed please contact Shanna Stevenson, Coordinator of Women's History Consortium, at sstevenson@wshs.wa.gov Congratulations to Port Townsend Branch for their sponsorship of one of the Women Wi$e Women forums.
