Connie Dunkelberger, State President Association News--EdEqChange # 1 - Mid-July 2007 Briefing Special Notice: AAUW Members Approve Historic Bylaws Change On July 1, delegates at the 2007 AAUW convention in Phoenix voted unanimously to approve sweeping changes to AAUW's organizational structures. The vote gives the boards a green light to move forward with strategic initiatives that will help create a viable and sustainable 21st century organization. To implement these dramatic changes, delegates approved a measure establishing a transitional board of directors and the composition of the 2009 board. As a result of the restructuring vote, AAUW and the Educational Foundation will combine many of their assets and activities to form a streamlined, mission-driven organization with a single set of elected officers. Another key change approved by the delegates provides for voting between conventions by mail or electronic balloting. This "one member, one vote" amendment gives all members a voice in the organization's decisions and will help make AAUW a more responsive and equitable organization. Delegates also adopted amendments setting maximum terms for elected officers, outlining procedures for filling vacancies that arise among regional directors and committee chairs, establishing an audit committee and restructuring the nominating committee. In the final vote of the day, delegates agreed to strike from the bylaws all references to the International Federation of University Women, with the exception of the provision for international reciprocity, which will remain as a courtesy. The unanimous vote to adopt the Strategic Process proposal for restructuring of the AAUW corporations is a tribute to the leaders who, for the last two decades, have recognized the need for change and advocated various measures to accomplish that change. AAUW Mountain-Pacific Regional Focus July 2007 AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research. Summer greetings to Mountain-Pacific Leaders! It seems impossible that our Association convention was nearly a month ago. I?m sure you came away with many ideas and visions of what we can do in our region to promote equity for women and girls. One of the things I?ve been struggling with was a common thread through convention (and in my profession as an optometrist)---FOCUS. You know AAUW is in a state of change on all fronts, and we can play a part in shaping that change?locally, statewide and regionally! If you?ve visited the Association website, you have seen the multitudes of programs and communication tools at our fingertips. Sometimes it?s overwhelming to digest all the new material and areas of action. As Association liaison between our states and Association, I would like to propose some focus areas for our region. 1. COMMUNICATION: I am planning to share this periodic newsletter with state leaders to help each one know what the other states? calendars and program emphases are. Is there any interest in a Mountain-Pacific chat room or blog space where you could post and share messages? I will try to get all of you in email communication. 2. EQUITY: Start planning branch involvement in Pay Equity Day on April 22, 2008. There are plenty of resources on the website and it looks like Association has ?front-loaded? this area with advance notice of the date and collaborative partners to engage. Hawaii is on track already. 3. ADVOCACY: I would like to share each state?s public policy focus areas with you. We can sharpen our FOCUS by seeing what neighboring states do with their resources. Montana includes the native population in their focus areas. 4. EDUCATION: Now this may seem a stretch, but can we be the ?Legacy Circle? Region??? I had the good fortune to sit at the ?Washington table? at the Legacy Circle lunch at convention. I met the people who led their Legacy Circle campaign, and it is something we could do as a region by educating our members about the ease and benefits of committing some part of your estate plan or life insurance, mutual fund or other financial vehicle toward the Educational Foundation. And it costs nothing up front! 5. RESEARCH: Local scholarships have been one of AAUW?s strongest membership connections, but for years, we have downplayed this community-based giving in our organization. Can we each do state-wide research that defines where our branches give scholarships, to what type of students, how much money, and to what type of college? We could focus branch giving on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) female students. Find out if branches already select community college student or women returning to school more than high school graduates. We can forge relationships with these campuses and have a presence in our communities. You can see where we?re going with this! FOCUS our giving. Your part?as if you needed another thing on your to-do list (give me your blunt feedback on this!!!) Please send me your state web link and/or state newsletter in PDF or Word to share with other states. I would also like to be on your branch newsletters? mailing lists?Betsy McDowell, 3722 Tunbridge Wells SE, Salem OR 97302 betsymcd@comcast.net Send me your state meeting and events calendar and program schedule (time, place, activities) for each meeting as it becomes available. Provide me your public policy program focus areas and I?ll send them out to you all. Ask your teams or boards what they think of focusing branch scholarship giving and promoting a Legacy Circle campaign over the next two years. I have some tools to get started, and we have regional experts we may call upon for help. Please let me know what information you would like me to provide as you form your AAUW year plans and goals. I know I can learn from you, and I?m eager to see you on your turf, so please keep me in mind as a resource and state visitor. You may have already heard, the Conference of State Leaders in Washington DC has been cancelled for 2008 in lieu of local programming. (I sound like a TV station!) Anyway, it is likely that we will hold a regional meeting in late June of 2008 to facilitate leadership training for multiple offices. I would love to hear from you with your level of interest and possible attendance numbers. Folks were pretty enthusiastic when I asked in Phoenix, so just keep me in the loop as the year progresses, and I?ll do the same. Maybe put something in state budget for a trip for four to Portland? I will try to NOT duplicate what we receive in the EdEqChange newsletters?please tell me if you are NOT receiving this email publication. ? The new Association board meets next weekend for their retreat and I?m sure we?ll have lots of news coming our way in mid August. Thank you for supporting AAUW in your leadership and mentoring in your states and branches!
