AAUW secured three of the biggest wire services to cover the story: the Associated Press, Reuters, and Bloomberg. Their stories were picked up by numerous outlets across the country. In addition to the AP, Reuters, and Bloomberg stories, about 200 original print, online, and broadcast pieces were published or aired.* Based on estimated exposure through print, broadcast, and online media, Behind the Pay Gap reached an audience of more than 70 million as of May 1. Overall, the media launch of Behind the Pay Gap was successful in every aspect, and the visibility from this media release has made AAUW's name more familiar to journalists, pundits, members of Congress, and everyday readers, viewers, and listeners. Advocacy & Action AAUW Expert Testifies at Congressional Hearing On Tuesday, April 24-Equal Pay Day-the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and Labor held a hearing, Strengthening the Middle Class: Ensuring Equal Pay for Women. Catherine Hill, AAUW Educational Foundation research director, testified about the findings of the Educational Foundation's new Behind the Pay Gap research report, which she coauthored. A web cast of the hearing is archived on the committee's website. Hill's testimony starts about 40 minutes into the web cast. For AAUW resources for action on pay equity, visit the AAUW website. Strategic Process Update On the Road to Convention The strategic process is on the move. Keynote presentations, along with workshops on change and AAUW's strategic process, have already been shared and discussed at 40 state conventions and meetings. Members of the boards of directors of both the Association and the Educational Foundation have been in attendance, as well as committee chairs and former national leaders. At these events, members welcomed the opportunity to become more informed and ask their questions in person. Presenters are capturing member comments so that they can be addressed at the Association convention in Phoenix. Detailed reports of each state convention are being submitted to the Leader-to-Leader program coordinator to ensure that delegates have the most complete information as they prepare for their important votes on the bylaws amendments and proposals. If you are not able to attend the Association convention in June, please share your thoughts with delegates who will be attending and voting on behalf of your state. Please review the complete strategic process materials on the website. Convention Update More Reasons to Register! An impressive list of 13 speakers and awardees and over 50 workshops will be offered at the convention. You'll also have great networking opportunities in the AAUW Connection (formerly known as the exhibit hall). Each day of the convention, the AAUW Connection will feature model branch and state programs at the Taste of Success, an opportunity to learn about programs and services from the national office at the AAUW Annex, exclusive AAUW merchandise at ShopAAUW, and a diverse collection of authors in the Book Corner. Direct comments and questions to feedback@aauw-wa.org American Association of University Women June, 2007 A Convention Special Call to Action: from Association Communications Chair I have a favor to ask of y'all. My task force has been asked to help "mobilize the troops" to register for the Phoenix convention. We tried the personal touch in the Southwest and California-asking members to start telephone trees among their friends and colleagues in their states-and it has been successful. AAUW also used the same marketing tactic for the NCCWSL, and we have surpassed the number of students attending at the last conference. Please let your members know that there's a lot at stake: the tradition of our biennial conventions and the direction of AAUW via the bylaws change proposals. If there is a time to ask members to make a personal and financial commitment to AAUW by attending convention, it is now. Many thanks and best regards, Leslie Henderson Chair, AAUW Internal Communications and Roll-Out Task Force The Early Bird rate is still in effect for the registration. If you have not notified me that you are going or still need a roommate please contact me ASAP. Connie Dunkelberger College Women Student Leaders Conference Update New Sponsors for the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders Our sincere thanks go to all the states and branches who have contributed to the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders scholarship fund. We are especially pleased to announce that conference registration has been a great success! To date, more than 300 participants have signed up to attend the conference, which will take place June 7-9 at American University in Washington, D.C. Advocacy & Action Public Policy Chairs to Meet with Members of Congress for Pay Equity Legislation AAUW has generated great momentum on the equal pay issue with the release of Behind the Pay Gap, and we are keeping the pressure on Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 766) and the House companion bill (H.R. 1338). State and branch public policy chairs whose legislators have not yet signed on as co-sponsors of these measures have been asked to meet with members of their congressional delegation. If you would like to participate, please contact your branch or state public policy chair. This type of outreach is a very effective way to advance AAUW's mission and legislative goals. For further information please contact Seth Chase, public policy field director, at chases@aauw.org or 202/785-7786. 2008 Equal Pay Day Date Announced The National Committee on Pay Equity, a coalition of which AAUW is a member, has selected Tuesday, April 22, as Equal Pay Day for 2008. To match men's earnings for 2007, women will have to work from January 2007 to April 2008-an extra four months. Equal Pay Day takes place each April and symbolizes the point in the next year to which a woman must work to achieve pay equity for the previous year. Her male counterpart must work five days a week for twelve months, whereas she will work seven days a week for sixteen months to earn equivalent wages. It's never too early to start planning and building on all the great things you did this year to commemorate Equal Pay Day. AAUW's Website Ranked by the Internet Scout Report The Internet Scout Report, a publication and service sponsored by the University of Wisconsin, ranked AAUW's website number 3 in the General Interest category for the week of May 18, 2007. You can read their review on AAUW by clicking AAUW's listing in the report. It provides a concise but comprehensive overview of AAUW, including the 125th anniversary, voter education efforts, pay gap report, online museum, fellowships and grants, and the National Girls Collaborative Project. News around the State-- Educational Foundation Notes Convention is over but the warmth and camaraderie continue. The Saturday luncheon earned $940.00 for the Educational Foundation. Thank you to all who contributed. Thanks also to those branches that brought a fund-raiser item to convention or sponsored an event at their branch and brought checks to the convention. All efforts for the Education Foundation are certainly appreciated. The endowments of Highline and Tacoma, still needing completion, received much needed support, as well. Educational Foundation chairs please take note, donations should be sent to their post office box for easier facilitation. Direct them to either AAUW Educational Foundation or to AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund at: P.O. Box 630832; Baltimore, MD 21263-0832. Thanks again. Leah Amyakar, State EF Chair DrLeahAmyakar@comcast.net President's Notes At the Spokane convention a President's Award was given to Ritzville Branch member Sherrie Schafer. Branch Presidents were asked to nominate individuals who demonstrated the ideals of AAUW and worked for the mission of AAUW in a tireless manner. They were to be judged by the branch activities and not work on the state level, so therefore they were not to nominate State Officers. Other members receiving special recognition certificates were: Sally Kearsley, Walla Walla; Marylu Wing, Everett; Marti Thomson, Whidbey Island; Tana Carosella, Spokane; Helen Behan, Edmonds; Carolyn Cowan, Federal Way; Lee Ann Ufford, Tacoma; Livonia Lowe, Lake Washington; Valerie Herlocker, Stanwood-Camano; and Gene Kuechmann, Hudson's Bay. Congratulations to you all. The Summer Leadership conference is scheduled for August 11, 2007. It will be held at Koinonia Retreat Center near Cle Elum, WA. Information and registration forms will be on the website soon. Congratulations to the Tacoma Branch as they celebrated their centennial on May 19th. Their EF Centennial Fund is well over half way to completion. Sincerely, Connie Dunkelberger Constance Dunkelberger AAUW Member Letters will arrive once a month.
