Women Embracing Change- through advocacy, education and research State Convention: April 25-27 at the Little Creek Casino in Shelton "Change" is in the air! This spring's conference theme was chosen more than a year ago and becomes more relevant each day. The convention team, made up of representatives of branches in the South Puget Sound district, has been planning a total conference with speakers, activities and workshop leaders which will help us as we embrace change in our Association, our branches - and in our lives. Two Friday optional tours are available. As you travel to Shelton on Friday, plan to stop in Olympia for the free guided walking tour of the state capitol grounds, starting at 1:00. Then, after you've arrived at Little Creek, take the hotel shuttle (or your own car) for a 3:00 guided tour of the nearby Squaxin Tribe Museum, where excellent displays depict the tribal culture of the area. You're on your own for Friday supper, but we'd recommend the seafood buffet at Little Creek or the caf? on site. Shelton is just a short drive away, with many restaurants, as well. The state board meeting (state officers, including branch presidents) starts at 8:30 p.m. on Friday. Branches are welcome to raise funds for the Education Foundation by selling items, raffle tickets or bringing baskets or items for a silent auction. These will be displayed in the convention hospitality center so plan to mix, mingle and make you bids. Outstanding women will be sharing ideas at breakfast (education and equity issues), lunch (women's history in Washington State) and dinner (improving the quality of life for women and families in developing countries). Workshop will also be held at the morning and afternoon sessions. Leaders of the workshops include: women doing graduate work with Education Foundation fellowships, Educational Foundation broad members and a LAF (Legal Advocacy Fund) plaintiff. Plan to be listening for ideas that can translate into new perspectives for your branches. Saturday evening's banquet will be followed by entertainment and a chance to meet AAUW members from across our state. Sunday morning we'll be hearing from the LAF plaintiff, Lisa Simpson. ( note the LAF news -section 5) In addition, Betsy McDowell, the Mountain-Pacific Regional Director for AAUW, will be updating us on changes in AAUW and sharing ideas about AAUW's future. The Sunday morning session will end with a public policy update and convention closure, and you'll be on your way home just after noon. "Think green" and bring a bag to use for convention materials. If you have AAUW convention bags from past years, bring your oldest and join in the "parade of old bags". A prize will be given for the bag with the oldest date. We all look forward to seeing you at Little Creek! The South Puget Sound branches 4. AAUW welcomes Linda D. Hallman as its new executive director The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is pleased to welcome Linda DT. Hallman as its new executive director. She joins AAUW with a long history of executive-level association and foundation experience in the Washington, D.C., area. "Over the past year, AAUW has taken bold steps in new directions, and I am honored to be joining this powerful and dynamic organization," stated Hallman. "There is, indeed, work that remains undone. AAUW's future is bright-and together, with the dedication and commitment of volunteer leaders and members and the excellent staff, we will build on AAUW's past and present successes as we pursue even greater achievements in the future." 5. AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund Plaintiff Settles Discrimination Suit with University of Colorado at Boulder for $2.5 Million The American Association of University Women Legal Advocacy Fund is pleased to recognize an important victory in the ongoing battle to prevent sexual harassment and assault on university campuses with the settlement agreement between Lisa Simpson and the University of Colorado at Boulder (CU). A former student at CU, Simpson sued the university under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 for failing to remedy the sexually hostile environment on campus that led to her sexual assault and harassment by university football recruits and players.. Although the university charged the students involved with code of conduct violations, it declined to pursue sexual assault charges against them. In addition, none of the football players lost his eligibility to play in any subsequent football games. Throughout the suit, Simpson advocated nationwide reforms to college and university policies to improve the treatment and safety of women on campuses. CU overhauled its football recruiting program, and several top officials, including the chancellor and the football coach, resigned in the aftermath. View the full case summary of Simpson v. University of Colorado at Boulder at http://www.aauw.org/advocacy/laf/cases/simpson.cfm . Plan to hear Lisa speak at our State Convention in April. 6. Congratulations to: The Olympia Branch for being a sponsor for the 2008 National Girls and Women in Sports Day in Thurston County. The branch will be included in the week long events that begin with an Educational Workshop for High School Girls. The Tacoma Branch for the collaboration with "First Books" on a successful used book sale benefiting both organizations. First Books is a national organization giving new books to children in need. To the Lewis County Branch for awarding Alana Romero, a Hispanic high school student, $200 in order to attend a Leadership Conf. in Washington, D.C. this month. Alana is bi-lingual and her favorite subject is Mathematics. Many branch members have been helping their neighbors who were victims of the floods. Co-President, Joy Carter wrote: "The Lewis County Branch thanks all of you for your concern about the December flood disaster. None of our AAUW members had serious damage. However, the hundred's who lost everything need lots of help as the FEMA Grants are woefully inadequate. Our members and the community continue to give their time, dollar's and item's. What is needed most are Gift Cards from Home Depot, Sears or WalMart. These local stores have the building supplies and furnishings for rebuilding homes. The local library also lost a few hundred books and would like to replace them. Please send donations to me and I will give them to the committee in charge of distribution. The gifts are being given based upon need. We appreciate your concern. Joy Carter, co-president Lewis County, 115 Granite Lane, Chehalis, WA 98532 Phone 360-266-0028 E-mail cofjoy@hotmail 7.
