Membership in AAUW By joining AAUW, we belong to a community that breaks through educational and economic barriers so that all women have a fair chance. The new program year begins on July 1st. Have you renewed your AAUW "Value Promise" by paying your 2008-2009 dues? The AAUW "Value Promise" is a product of the Strategic Process undertaken by AAUW members and leaders over the past couple of years. Establishing this Value Promise has been an important element in helping to clarify our identity, purpose and key strategies to guide our decisions for the future. It is our statement of commitment to ourselves, as AAUW members. Our challenge is to live it - we've promised! AAUW-WA Leadership Conference, CWU, Ellensburg August 2, 2008, 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. >From your 2008-09 AAUW-WA Leadership Team: In June, we held the first two of our district "listening sessions" in Everett and Federal Way. Representatives of 15 of our branches answered the question: "What would you like us to focus on at the August 2 Leadership Conference?" We listened, and the conference will be filled with ideas and strategies for strengthening our leadership in advocacy, governance, communications and fundraising. We'll have sessions for branch presidents and other peer leaders, and there will be opportunities to meet with leaders from other branches in your AAUW-WA district. We'll have progress reports on the Goals and Objectives from the convention and the website redesign project along with an update from association and a short board meeting. We look forward to working with you to make sure it's a productive day. See you in Ellensburg. Dixie Swenson P.S. The conference Registration Form is on the web site at: http://www.aauw-wa.org/members/corner/AAUW_WA_LC0808RegForm.pdf 3. 2008 National Conference for College Women Student Leaders More than 500 students attended the June 7-9, 2008 in Washington, D.C. At least six students attended from our state. The conference, sponsored by AAUW and Student Affairs Administrators, was a huge success! Highlights of the conference, including video clips can be seen on the website at: http://www.aauw.org/nccwsl/2008/ A special thank you goes to Seattle, Olympia, Anacortes and Tacoma for their financial help and interest in this conference. Their donations made it possible for two women from Washington colleges to attend this conference. I have not received the list of sponsoring branches or the complete list of Washington students who attended as yet; therefore if you or your branch gave financial aid to AAUW/ Leadership Training Institute or sponsored a student please accept my apology. The AAUW Leadership Training Institute is grateful for all the donations going to this worthy project. 4. Thanks and best wishes from Connie Dunkelberger June has been a transition month for AAUW-WA. Next week, Dixie Swenson, our former Public Policy Chair, will begin her term as our State President. She has appointed a great leadership team to work with the other elected officers and branches around the state. Two "listening sessions" held in June were a very successful start in making our organization more effective in working toward equity for women and girls. I know this two-way communications will continue to improve our ability to advocate for the mission of AAUW. I would also like to congratulate Dixie on being appointed to the Association's Public Policy Committee. Thank you all for making my two years as your State President a wonderful experience. I was unable to visit all the branches, but made it to nearly all of them. I was very impressed by the unique branch projects and programs being carried out in your communities. I am confident that AAUW members will continue to be a powerful advocate for education and equity for women and girls in Washington. Again, I thank you all as we make this smooth transition to a new leadership team, and I hope that you will give them all of the support and cooperation you gave us. Best wishes for a great 2008-2009 program year!
