See you at Little Creek Resort in Shelton, WA - April 25-27, 2008 Information from Washington Update * Attend the Women's Equality Day Summit You have an opportunity to participate in a public policy conference and lobby day in Washington, D.C., with other AAUW members and AAUW coalition partners. The Women's Equality Summit and Congressional Action Day will bring together hundreds of women leaders and their allies for two days of issue briefings, training sessions, and face-to-face meetings with members of Congress and national women leaders. The Summit will be held in Washington, D.C., on March 10-11. The Summit is a project of the National Council of Women's Organizations, the largest coalition of women's groups in the country, and the Younger Women's Task Force, the grassroots movement that engages women in their 20's and 30's to act on the issues that matter most to them. AAUW is a member of NCWO. AAUW encourages women to get involved and take action on issues important to them. This is a great opportunity to make your voice heard on Capitol Hill on issues you care about, and represent AAUW to congressional leaders and women from around the country. For more information, visit the NCWOs website. Sign Up for Action Network! To mobilize AAUW members to be constituent advocates, AAUW has created the Action Network, an email alert system that anyone with an email address can subscribe to. Thoughts from the Association and Educational Foundation Boards "At the core of all the work of the boards was the unanimous commitment to the following Value Promise: "By joining AAUW, you belong to a community that breaks through educational and economic barriers so all women have a fair chance." The Value Promise is a guiding principle that serves as a filter for all the complex decisions we face in our work to consolidate AAUW while expanding our reach and impact. It is a simple concept with far-reaching implications that unifies our organization, reflects our values, and provides a vision for our future. Furthermore, the Value Promise is a concise statement that members can use to convey the mission and vision of AAUW." Quoted from EdEqChange, Feb. briefing. It is money or assets left to a charity in your will - known as a bequest. Bequests often allow you to make a sizable gift that might not be possible during your lifetime. A bequest has several advantages: a.. It is 100 percent deductible for estate tax purposes; b.. It may place your estate in a lower estate tax bracket; and c.. It will allow AAUW development staff to include your bequest intentions in plans for the legacy donor club. In a simple bequest, you give a stated amount to the Educational Foundation without attaching any conditions. Simple bequest language might read as follows: I give and bequeath to the AAUW Educational Foundation (Federal Tax ID# 52-6037388), a charitable organization duly existing under the laws of the District of Columbia and located at 1111 Sixteenth St. N.W., Washington, DC 20036, $________________ (indicate either the dollar amount of the gift, the percentage of your estate, or a description of the securities or real property you wish to donate) to be used as the AAUW Educational Foundation Board of Directors may determine. For more information on bequests and the legacy donor program, contact the development office at development@aauw.org or 202/728-3307. If you have recently made a bequest to AAUW E F or LAF and/or you are not listed at http://www.aauw-wa.org/members/directories/ef_2006_legacycircle.pdf , please let our State EF Chair know at ef@aauw-wa.org. AAUW NC provides travel grants and other assistance to the branches, but it seems there's never a really good way for someone who can't afford to participate to ask for assistance without running into a bureaucratic blockade. This is a particular issue with respect to attendance at conventions. Is there something we're missing? Or does this depend on more of us being sensitive to the issue and making private arrangements to fund those who make contributions of their time but simply can't afford the costs. I believe that most of those who say "AAUW is too expensive" just haven't been sold on the value proposition. However, there are a handful who are living on restricted budgets, and even the relatively nominal costs of NC meetings are more than they can afford. Should there be sliding scales for registration? Alternate arrangements for lodging? Some other way to use the honor system to keep costs down instead of an application for financial support? If any of you feel you're handling this particularly well, I'd appreciate details. Or if you're thinking of ways to provide extra support for members to go to St. Louis in 2009, I'd be interested in the criteria you're using. Thanks. Nancy (Connie wants some of your thoughts for Washington) Is this something you want to discuss at our convention? Do you have any ideas or thoughts? Washington has the small branch subsidy as a way of helping the small branches to have representation at conventions. If you have thoughts on this subject send them to feedback@aauw-wa.org . __________________________________________________________________________________ Impact Grant News Washington is one of 16 states who were asked to apply for a Public Policy impact grant for the 2008-2009 fiscal year. We are honored to be considered for a grant. In keeping with the "one size doesn't fit all" policy each state invited to apply must come up with their own plan as to how they would put the grant to use. The Public Policy team wants your ideas as to what is needed in Washington in the area of voter education or a get out the vote campaign. Contact publicpolicy@aauw-wa.org and give your ideas and or volunteer to help in this effort. Branch News: Congratulations to the Port Townsend Branch for their 60th Anniversary. Eighteen of their past branch presidents attended the celebration on March 15th. They have had two Past State Presidents and both were in attendance. Port Townsend became the largest branch in the state this year due to their excellent recruitment efforts and community projects. They have an excellent audio/visual presentation about their 60 years. See their success unfold at convention! The summer issue of the Evergreen Leader will be published the end of May. It will be electronic only and pictures will be used. If you have a news article, pictures or special information about your branch or projects please submit to: evergreenleader@aauw-wa.org by May 15, 2008.
