Support Pathways to Career Training While more women are working than ever before, many do not have the skills and opportunities necessary to obtain the high-wage jobs needed to adequately support themselves and their families. To address this, Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) recently introduced the Pathways to Advancing Career Training (PACT) Act (H.R. 5774). This legislation would fund programs that provide outreach, education, training, support, and job placement assistance to encourage and prepare women for nontraditional careers. To urge your representative to cosponsor the PACT Act go to: http://capwiz.com/aauw/issues/alert/?alertid=11325521&type=CO Support Paid Family Leave In honor of Mother's Day, AAUW asks you to urge your senators to support the Family Leave Insurance Act (S. 1681). This important legislation will provide up to eight weeks of paid leave to workers needing time off due to the birth or adoption of a child, to care for a child, spouse or parent with a serious illness, or to care for their own serious illness. AAUW believes that creating work environments that help employees balance the responsibilities of work and family is good public policy - good for workers, good for families, and good for business. Urge your senators to cosponsor and support the Family Leave Insurance Act: http://capwiz.com/aauw/issues/alert/?alertid=10156576&type=CO 3. New Directions for LAF We are pleased to announce that Holly Kearl is the new LAF Program Manager working under the supervision of Jill Birdwhistell, PhD, Chief of Strategic Advancement. Many members and others who look to AAUW for our leadership have urged us to extend our LAF plaintiff support beyond academia to other workplace settings. AAUW's new Value Promise affirms that: As AAUW members, we belong to a community that breaks through .barriers so ALL women have a fair chance. LAF is expanding to include sex discrimination in all workplaces to reflect our commitment to that fair chance. A primary aspect of this expansion is to build on AAUW's history of participating as amicus curiae in cases affecting women's rights. In collaboration with the Public Policy and Government Relations department, we will seek expanded friend of the court opportunities in cases of discrimination that disadvantage women in the workplace. With this strategy, we believe that we will maximize our effectiveness and ensure that we will be heard by courts that affirmatively want our opinion on the cases and the issues before them. AAUW has also made the decision to move away from direct financial plaintiff case support. While plaintiffs have been grateful for our financial support, it has always been the act of putting AAUW's name behind the case and the issue that has been our central contribution. If you have questions about this action, read more about it on the web site or request the full briefing called LAF express from feedback@aauw-wa.org . 4. Jaurequito v. Feather River Community College This is a case close to home. Michelle Jaurequito is the plaintiff in the Feather River Community College of California, which has been written about in communications this past year. She is presently at Washington State University and appreciates letters/notes of support. The case is scheduled for August, 2008. She will speak at the Idaho AAUW convention, May 30-June 1, 2008. AAUW's newest report, Where the Girls are: the Facts About Gender Equity in Education, was released on Tuesday, May 20th to the National Press Club. The next day, AAUW held a breakfast briefing for Hill staffers and coalition partners. The report puts to rest the myth of a boys' crisis, and proves once and for all that AAUW's efforts to help girls don't come at boys' expense. Indeed, by most indicators of educational achievement, both boys and girls have made solid gains in recent decades. Nevertheless, our work is far from complete, as many girls and boys are emerging from our educational system without the skills that they need to succeed in the 21st century workplace. Members can download a free copy of Where the Girls Are: The Facts About Gender Equity in Education at: http://www.aauw.org/research/whereGirlsAre.cfm You can also read a Washington Post article on the report at: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/19/AR2008051902798.html?hpid=topnews .
