impossible that our Association convention was nearly a month ago. I’m sure you
came away with many ideas and visions of what we can do in our region to promote
equity for women and girls. One of the things I’ve been struggling with was a
common thread through convention (and in my profession as an
optometrist)---<B>FOCUS. </B>You know AAUW is in a state of change on all
fronts, and we can play a part in shaping that change—locally, statewide and
regionally! If you’ve visited the Association website, you have seen the
multitudes of programs and communication tools at our fingertips. Sometimes it’s
overwhelming to digest all the new material and areas of action. As Association
liaison between our states and Association, I would like to propose some focus
areas for our region. <o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Times"><FONT face=Times>1.
<B>COMMUNICATION</B>: I am planning to share this periodic newsletter with state
leaders to help each one know what the other states’ calendars and program
emphases are. <I>Is there any interest in a </I><o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=Times><I><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Times">Mountain-Pacific chat
room or blog space where you could post and share messages? </SPAN></I><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Times">I will try to get

<B>EQUITY</B>: Start planning branch involvement in Pay Equity Day on April 22,
2008. There are plenty of resources on the website and it looks like Association
has “front-loaded” this area with advance notice of the date and collaborative
partners to engage. <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns =
"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State
w:st="on">Hawaii</st1:State></st1:place> is on track already.
<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Times"><FONT face=Times>3.
<B>ADVOCACY</B>: I would like to share each state’s public policy focus areas
with you. We can sharpen our FOCUS by seeing what neighboring states do with
their resources. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State
w:st="on">Montana</st1:State></st1:place> includes the native population in
their focus areas. <o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Times"><FONT face=Times>4.
<B>EDUCATION</B>: Now this may seem a stretch, but can we be the “<st1:Street
w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Legacy Circle</st1:address></st1:Street>”
Region??? I had <o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Times"><FONT face=Times>the good
fortune to sit at the “<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State
w:st="on">Washington</st1:State></st1:place> table” at the <st1:Street
w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Legacy Circle</st1:address></st1:Street> lunch
at convention. I met the <o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Times"><FONT face=Times>people
who led their <st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Legacy
Circle</st1:address></st1:Street> campaign, and it is something we could do as a
region by <o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Times"><FONT
face=Times>educating our members about the ease and benefits of committing some
part of your estate plan or <o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Times"><FONT face=Times>life
insurance, mutual fund or other financial vehicle toward the Educational
Foundation. And it costs <o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Times"><FONT face=Times>nothing
up front! <o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Times"><FONT face=Times>5.
<B>RESEARCH</B>: Local scholarships have been one of AAUW’s strongest membership
connections, but for years, we have downplayed this community-based giving in
our organization. Can we each do <o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Times"><FONT
face=Times>state-wide<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>research that
defines where our branches give scholarships, to what type of students, how
<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Times"><FONT face=Times>much
money, and to what type of college? We could focus branch giving on STEM
(science, technology, engineering and math) female students. Find out if
branches already select community <o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Times"><FONT face=Times>college
student or women returning to school more than high school graduates. We can
forge <o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Times"><FONT
face=Times>relationships with these campuses and have a presence in our

boards what they think of focusing branch scholarship giving and promoting a

Circle</st1:address></st1:Street> campaign over the next two years. I have some
tools to get started, and we have regional experts we may call upon for help.
Please let me know what information you would like me to provide as you form
your AAUW year plans and goals. I know I can learn from you, and I’m eager to
see you on your turf, so please keep me in <o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

may have already heard, the Conference of State Leaders in <st1:place

w:st="on">DC</st1:State></st1:place> has been cancelled for 2008 in lieu of
local programming. (I sound like a TV station!) Anyway, it is likely that we
will hold a regional meeting in late June of 2008 to facilitate leadership
training for multiple offices. I would love to hear from you with your level of
interest and possible attendance numbers. Folks were pretty enthusiastic when I
asked in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City
w:st="on">Phoenix</st1:City></st1:place>, so just keep me in the loop as the
year progresses, and I’ll do the same. Maybe put something in state budget for a
trip for four to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City
w:st="on">Portland</st1:City></st1:place>? I will try to NOT duplicate what we
receive in the EdEqChange newsletters—please tell me if you are NOT receiving
