I plan to be at the next Monday's NOPLUG meeting and will bring
Yellowdog 3.0. I will also bring my CD/DVD recorder and we can copy
whatever we want. You can start the installation and finish at home.

I missed the Feb meeting. Vday and all.

How was turnout? How'd it go? I'm curious if anyone is starting a library. I
just picked up a 2002 printing of SVGA Programming in Linux, and I have a
few other odds and ends books that we could get started with.

Some preliminary suggestions for future meetings:

1) Setting up a Linux peer-to-peer network & firewall.
2) Writing simple scripts, why, when and where?
3) Useful keyboard shortcuts
4) Comparing differences between major distributions
5) Ways to troubleshoot specific hardware issues - terminal vs. gui
6) Useful built-in tools
7) more???

Hi Everybody

Unfortunately I couldn't be at the meeting since I was down with
a wretched cold. Eric McRae was kind enough to sub for me. We
had about 20 people at the meeting and it went as advertised with
a short discussion and a demonstration of Knoppix. Eric also gave
a short demonstration of a thumb drive that will boot a small version
of Linux and run a secure DSL communications program. With this
you could carry it around and always have secure communications
on any computer you used. I think it was good lively meeting.
Note if you post to the list you need to use the same email address
you subscribed with or I have to approve a nonmember posting to
    the list as administrator.

I do think having a library is a good idea. Anyone else have any
thoughts on how we might implement this?

    Regards, Rod

I've a few to add:

* Mono & .Net: Overview and implications for the future of Gnome
* Gaming and Linux (developing, resources, and current games)
* Managing digital photos in Linux (Gphoto, GIMP, F-Spot, digiKam, et al)

Hi Steve

I think these are all good topics for future meetings. I'd like to have more
suggestions with the idea that I would compile a good sized list. Then we
could go over it with the group and prioritize it. Fianlly we could ask for
volunteers who wanted to do a presentation on one of the topics. This way
people would have both the opportunity of learning something of interest to
them and a chance to give back a little bit by passing on some of their
special expertise.

Along with this thread, I forgot to add another one:

Recompiling a kernel. Or compiling anything for that matter - unless one is
a programmer in the Windows world, you never learn about or do any compiling
of anything.

In response to Rod's appropriate suggestion, I'd love to take on a task IF I
knew anything about Linux. Since I don't I suppose I'll have to wait until I
do. Then I will.

;-)

Hi Pete

I really don't know anyone working with MySQL but with
your permission I could post this note to the NOPLUG
mailing list. NOPLUG is just getting started and I'm in the process of
trying to get to know people. I think about 20 people have signed up for
the mailing list. We may well have someone who would be interested.

I have a book on MySQL that I will bring Monday.

Queries are easy--just standard SQL language:
run mysql with the -p=password option and the name of the database (You
need to know the password and database name, of course and must be able
to access the database.)
type the SQL command
SELECT * FROM table_name; (as an example and don't forget the
semicolon--I always do!!)
this will output everything in table_name (which again you must know)

That is the easy part--how to create the database and find info about
it is a little harder as is writing a program to access the database.
The really hard part (at least to me) is the security part (being able
to access the database, but not let the "bad guys" in.)

The above assumes that the running username has the needed capabilities in
the MySQL database and the database is local and no one hacks the Linux
user's bash_history file. And it writes the password into the users
bash_history file (or other shell equivalent).

   a. -u username will specify the MySQL user if needed.
   c. -p without a password will prompt for the password in the usual
hidden way.
   b. -h FQDN or -h ip-address will use the proper machine if the data base
isn't local.
   c. -p without a password will prompt for the password in the usual
hidden way.

"Just standard SQL language" isn't easy if one doesn't know SQL. And MySQL
does have extensions to standard SQL (which one might avoid in scripts if
one might switch engines).

You don't need to know...you can type
show tables;

(If you don't even know the database name, you can get started with
show databases;

You can learn the column names (and types) with
explain table-name;

GRANT (and REVOKE) are among the annoyingly complex aspects of SQL. I have
to look them up whenever I use them. (But then, I spent about 8 years
having to look up the ln command in order to get the parameters in the right
order.)

But they do give lots of control. In a table with columns a, b, and c, it's
entirely normal to give user john read and update access to column a, read
access to column b, and no useful access to column c. In an organization
(or if john tends to be as careless as this john), one might well do that.

You can even let john do more if he's on the machine running the database
than on some other machine (or a particular other machine, and no access at
all from others, or different access from different other machines). If
john uses wireless hotspots and you actually let him in to the database at
all on those ips, you might take away the write access for "other" IPs.

I know just enough to work with one or more books right at hand, and I won't
be feeling well Monday evening*, so I won't be much help. I'll likely be
there.

*This is scheduled, these days.

The comically ambiguous names for these parameters in the manual page doesn't
help. I can usually keep the order straight, until I start trying to figure
out what "source" and "destination" mean in the context of a link.

noplug.org is taken, as is noplug.net and noplug.com. Underscores aren't
allowed in domain names, but we can use hyphens (though, shouldn't we then be
nop-lug.org?)

I'd be interested to hear any other suggestions that anyone has for a domain
name. Possibilities so far are:

no-plug.org (or nop-lug.org)
noplug.info
noplug.ws
neoplug.org

All of the above are available at the time of this writing. The last
suggestion would imply a change in the name of the LUG to "North-East Olympic
Peninsula Linux Users Group". I realize such a name change was originally
made in semi-jest, but the name "NEOPLUG" is kinda neat.

All things considered, I think my favorite so far is noplug.info. Anyone have
any ideas or comments?

Thanks,
Jeffrey

Hi Everybody

I kind of like no-plug.org but neoplug.org sounds
good too. How about some more opinons before
we settle on the domain name? Not necessarily a
majority vote but does anyone want to say somthing.
Now is the time.

Regards, Rod

I suggested noplug.us before, but it seems I sent it to Jeffrey Froman
specifically and not to the mailing list.

Anyway, noplug.us does seem to be available.

Hi Jeffrey

I think everyone has had a chance to weigh in on the
subject both serious and frivolous. So let's go with
_noplug.us_ it keeps the name we started with and
identifies as being in the US probably a good choice.
I really appreciate your help on this Jeffrey and thanks
to everyone for their input.

Regards, Rod

noplug.us it is then. The NOPLUG website can now be accessed at:

http://noplug.us

I registered the domain name for 2 years, which cost $13.90. The domain
hosting has been generously donated by Ned Schumann at OlympusNet. Ned also
provides this mailing list for us. Huge thanks to Ned for everything.

The web site has been updated with information about next month's meeting, so
check it out.

Jeffrey

Hi Everybody

A big thanks to Jeffrrey and Ned on the domain name.
I'll reimburse Jeffrey at the next meeting for registering the
name noplug.us. Just got a note from Eric that he decided to
bail out on Yoper and use Fedora Core 3. Yoper is rough
around the edges. Look forward to seeing you all at the next
meeting be sure and check out the website.

Regards, Rod

Hi Jeffrey,

Thanks. I have some time tomorrow and will spin an update of the
scripts. Shall I send it to this address?

BTW, I think about a year ago, while struggling with a weird cablespeed
problem, I sent you some email. I'd discovered by pinging that you were
on the same subnet as my server and I knew that meant you were running
at higher speeds than the masses.

Bring your resumes, it's official, Google will be aggressively recruiting=
 from
their exhibit table at LFNW this year.

This makes two recruiters in attendance, Volt and Google.

Google has also decided to sponsor an after party! Mark informed me
that he has orders from Google to purchase 200 tickets to the April Brews=
 Day
celebration. Google will be distributing them from their exhibit table.

The April Brews Day is an indoor event with 16 Northwest Micro Breweries
represented. There's live music, food and lots of good beer. It should be=
 a
great event since we will out number the locals :)
The only down side is it's an over 21 event.

Hats off to Mark who's hard work is responsible for Google's appearance a=
t
LFNW 05 and lining up a great party venue at the last minute.

Cheers,

Bill

Last week Carl Constantine asked if there was a non-alcohol party after
the fest. I checked with the Bay St. Coffee House today and the manager
said he would be pleased to have Linuxfest people join their Saturday
night event.
http://www.baystreetcoffee.com/

They will 3 bands, espresso, baked goods and free wifi. Bring proof of
your Linuxfest attendence (program, TShirt or other Tux swag) to the
door to avoid the small cover charge. If enough people commit in advance
the manager will reserve a room just for Tuxies in case we find the
music too loud for conversation. Let me know if you plan to go there so
I can tell him in advance.

Bellinghamsters will probably remember this spot as the former Stuarts
Coffee House. It closed for a remodel and cleanup and is now under new
management. This is in the same block as the April Brews Day and will
stay open till 11:00 PM so you have time to sober up before driving home
or back to your hotel.

For those who want to continue to party hardy after the Brews Day closes
I would recommend the Wild Buffalo just around the corner from Bay St
Coffee. Good dance music, good beer, good food and no smoke.

I've been talking to Stas Bekman (ya know, the mod_perl dude) about
visiting Seattle in early August (after OSCON) to give a mod_perl
presentation. He is very interested in meeting with local users
groups. He
is also interested in getting a chance to explore the area and enjoys
hiking. Send specific topic requests to me (off-list) so I can compile
a
list for him.

If your company is interested in helping to cover his expenses while
visiting, please put me in touch with the appropriate people to make
this
happen. There may also be an opportunity for Stas to meet with your

Feel free to forward this on to other regional user groups you feel

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

I've been to a couple of NOPLUG meetings, and I have a problem that perhaps
one of the members could help me solve.

I have a small LAN that ties together a Mac G4, a Windows XP box, and a
Linux server box. I use it for developing a database driven web site. I'm
having problems getting the LAN to work properly, and getting the Linux server set
up with PHP and MySQL. (I'm using the SUSE version of Linux, and know very
little about it. My background is more in mainframes and Windows.)

I'm willing to pay a reasonable consulting fee to somebody who could get me
through these problems, and I'm flexible when the work gets done - evenings,
weekends, etc. I'm in Port Townsend. Do you know anybody who might be
interested in this?

Thanks for your help!

Yours,

Philip Crawford

There is now an unofficial NOPLUG IRC channel -- #noplug on
irc.freenode.net. So far two people (myself and Jeffrey Froman) are
there regularly, but more people can always come. I'm opping this
channel at the moment, but if somebody else is interested, please
contact me.

Hi Everybody

I think this is a good idea. Nice way to keep in touch
between meetings. If you need a little help to get started
there is an excellent tutorial by Ron Tidd on how to set up
a chat on the KPLUG website.

Regards, Rod

*Subject: Invitation - IBM Linux briefing and LinuxFest in Seattle on
August 9*

Linux continues to pick up momentum as IT organizations worldwide choose
to enjoy the system independence provided by an open source platform
that doesn't sacrifice reliability and security. Developers in these
organizations can benefit from a development environment that provides
rapid and easy development, testing and maintenance of software for
their developers.

*Attend the IBM technical briefing, Migrating and developing new
applications for Linux, and see live demos of development tools and
migration techniques for Linux.*
/NOTE from KWM:/

/A continental breakfast will be served from 8:15 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. /

/Registration will commence at 8:30 a.m./

/The program will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m./

*Register for this half-day complimentary briefing by visiting*:
http://ibm.com/developerworks/offers/techbriefings/details/linux.html
/NOTE from KWM: The slides for the event are available at this site; do
your homework :-)
/
IT managers and administrators will gain an understanding of how to use
Linux based infrastructure servers in their departments and enable them
to further reduce costs.

IT or project managers will see project management tools that ease the
management of the development process and a demo that will help you
understand the time and resources required for a development or a
migration project on Linux.

If you have trouble with registration, email us at:
tbrief@us.ibm.com <mailto:tbrief@us.ibm.com>.

_*Please note the Linux technical briefing will be followed by IBM
LinuxFest* *Seattle in the afternoon*_.
LinuxFest is a complimentary hands-on workshop to let you test drive Linux.
*You can attend either an “Installing Linux” or a “Using Linux”
session**,** based on your skill and level of comfort with Linux.*
Seating for LinuxFest is limited, so please register by August 7, by
reading the session registration and enrollment details below and
following the instructions.
*_IBM LinuxFest Seattle overview, registration and enrollment:
_*
Two separate *Linux installation sessions* will be offered:
*The first session*, "*Installing Linux*", is for those of you who are
interested in installing Linux on your laptop. The focus of this session
will be on installation and basic commands for operating and utilizing
Linux. You will depart this session with a fully functional Linux machine.
*The second session*, "*Using Linux*", will feature specific Linux
commands. You will learn how to manage, monitor, debug, and
install/modify software. Ultimately you will install IBM software on Linux.

To participate in IBM LinuxFest, *please arrive at the event with your
laptop prepared*:

· *VMware 4.5.2* installed on your personal laptop.
You can download a 30-day trial version of VMware (at no cost) from the
following website:
http://www.vmware.com/download

· A fully charged battery

· Be equipped with a *DVD-ROM, 768 megabytes of RAM and six to eight GB
of available hard drive space*, and a keyboard optimized for English (US).

Note: If you cannot arrive with your personal laptop, you may take
advantage of a very limited supply of loaner IBM ThinkPads .

These sessions are appropriate for individuals with responsibility for
administering or supporting the Linux operating system and for anyone
interested in a hands-on learning experience. You are welcome to select
either section.

*Please enroll for IBM LinuxFest by following the instructions below*.
Enrollment will close by August 8 at noon, or when sections fill to
capacity.
